It’s that time of year again when many people take a good hard look at their lives and determine they want to change things. For some it’s to quit smoking, for others it’s losing weight, improving their diet, or starting an exercise routine.

What is it about the new year that makes us so, health-conscious? I believe it has to do with the realization that we are entering yet another year of our lives and none of us will be here forever. The reaction is to do something, anything to fix that. To fight the inevitable hands of time.

The problem with new year’s resolutions

When we have set a goal, we have to realize that if that goal is very large and very different from what we are used to, it is tough to stick to. This isn’t to say we can’t make it work, but it will be so outside of our norm that it can overwhelm us.

The problem is that we tend to attack and throw everything we have at the goal all at once.

If we want to lose weight, we drastically change our diet and embark on an overly ambitious exercise program, that’s a lot of change all at once. It will be hard to maintain that much change month after month.
