We would all prefer to have positive, pleasurable lives. Easy days without stress or problems. Yet, as we all know life comes with a lot more than that. It’s how we perceive the hard times in life that cause suffering or peace through these experiences.

Our perceptions are based on our beliefs. Our beliefs are ingrained, shaped early on in life, and to some extent carried over from past lives. How can we change something so ingrained?

Observation

We must first look at what our beliefs are, if we are, for example, coming from a victim mentality we will perceive difficult events as happening against us. As if we are cursed, have nothing but bad luck.

If we have a mentality that is slanted toward pessimism, we perceive events as hopeless, and inevitable. We may very well have positive beliefs as well, but we are observing the ones that need to be uprooted, not the ones we want to remain.

Observation allows the opportunity to see your beliefs. Observe your thoughts, and notice your reactions to them. The reaction reveals your perception, the perception reveals your beliefs.
