Magnitude 5.1 Earthquake Hits the San Francisco Bay Area — Aftershocks Felt in its Wake
The most significant earthquake in the area since 2014
The Bay Area felt an earthquake Tuesday that rattled homes from San Jose to San Francisco. Residents were jolted Tuesday morning by the largest quake to hit the region since 2014 when the Napa quake, a magnitude of 6.0 occurred. Tuesday’s quake has been followed by aftershocks leaving many residents feeling uneasy.
Earthquakes are a normal part of life in this area of the country but they do not happen regularly enough to overly concern most residents. Beyond having an earthquake preparedness kit and a plan, life goes on. There is no earthquake season, years can go by without a significant one happening.
Tuesday's earthquake is a reminder to everyone living in California, or anywhere on the west coast, earthquakes can happen at any time.
The UC Berkeley Seismology Lab has created an app that sends an alert to residents to warn them of an impending earthquake. Typically the alert is only a 60-second warning but can give you enough time to get to a place of safety. Many residents across the region were alerted before Tuesday’s quake.
